About Us

With G. Collins & Sons Funeral Directors Ltd you know exactly who you are dealing with – An independent, family owned and managed company.

The company was formed in 1893 by George Collins as G. Collins, builder and later, undertaker. The building side of the company ceased trading when Value Added Tax (or VAT) was introduced into the UK on 1 April 1973 at a rate of 10%. This was the case with many family builders, believed to be in a bid to avoid the paperwork involved in filing a VAT return! Funerals however remained VAT exempt as they still do today.

The first funeral carried out was that of Mr. Borrett, landlord of the Cross Keys public house, believed to be between 1929-33.

The company holds membership with the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD). As a condition to membership to these organisations, a strict code of practice has to be adhered to.

Registered in England & Wales 6465310 – VAT Registration Number 863 2533 25

We have a dedicated and qualified team who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to offer support and assistance on any of the services we provide. These services can be arranged in the comfort of your own home or at our office, whichever you prefer.

Today the company is owned and managed by brother and sister, James Collins and Gemma Burdon, who are the fifth generation family members. James and Gemma took over the running of the company from their grandfather ‘Keith’ after his sad passing in January 2005. Originally the takeover was managed as a partnership, until the company became limited in 2008 with James and Gemma as the share holders.
